DELTA KINGS WIN FIRST HOME GAME
Stagg High School's Delta Kings won their first home game in their brand-new stadium on September 10. With just under 10 minutes left in the game against Franklin High School and down by 10 points, things weren’t looking good. Then the Kings threw two touchdown passes and blocked a last-second field goal attempt by Franklin. "With the new stadium and the comeback victory," Francisco Ortigoza (the player who threw the touchdown passes) said, "this is a night all of us will remember the rest of our lives." Don Norton, the Stagg High School coach said, "The kids showed a lot to come back there at the end. And it made a perfect finish to a wonderful night." The Delta King who blocked the Franklin field goal attempt during the last 14 seconds of the game was Phillip Laufiso.
The new stadium, which has already hosted the annual Stagg Football Camp, was funded by Measure Q, which passed in 2008. With a synthetic turf field, a 9-lane all-weather track, and sports field lighting, the stadium will host football, soccer, and track and field events with grandstand seating for over 3,000 fans. The new facility also has a ticket booth and a restroom/concession building.
Construction on the new Delta Queens Varsity softball stadium is nearing completion as well. This stadium - with synthetic turf, dugouts for the home and visitor teams, bullpens, batting cages, and sports field lighting - will be ready for the first homeruns by the Delta Queens.
Phase II construction at Stagg High School has broken ground on the Varsity baseball field and the new visitor parking lot.
Across town, Phase I construction work is in full swing for Edison High School's new football, soccer, and track stadium. New retaining walls and infrastructure efforts are in high gear.
Verde Design prepared a district-wide master plan and developed the designs for renovating the athletic facilities at all four of the Stockon Unified high schools. The facility renovations will be constructed in phases.
