VTA Lightrail Station Modifications,* SAN JOSÉ

The Valley Transportation Association (VTA) purchased new lightrail trains which had an entry threshold 8" above the existing platforms. This change meant that all of the platforms, access points, station hardscape, landscaping and site furnishings had to be raised. As part of the team retained to integrate the new design components into a seamless retrofitting of each station platform, we provided an assessment of each station, categorized existing conditions, and then re-designed the planting, irrigation and site furnishings for 11 northbound and 13 southbound stations. Designs at each station incorporated the existing trees and site features to be retained as well as identifying elements to be removed and replaced. Our services also included bid support and construction services to coordinate the installation of the new site improvements and their future maintenance.

The South Line Platforms Retrofit was awarded the 2009 Project of the Year for Infrastructure under $20 million by the Construction Management Association of America, Northern California Chapter.
