Sacred Heart Schools Track and Tennis Improvements,* Atherton

Sacred Heart Schools is a collection of private Catholic schools serving K-12 students on a single campus. The project master plan had to meet the recreational and athletic needs of the schools and respond to the challenges presented by the site and the ordinances of the Town of Atherton.

Because the site faced water runoff restrictions and had no available connections to on- or off-site storm systems, an on-site storm water retention system had to be part of the design. The Town also required that the improvements have minimal visual impact for the neighboring residences.

To achieve our goal of preserving the heritage oak trees on the site, the tennis courts and the new, all-weather track were aligned to minimize their impact on the trees.

To achieve proper court orientation, the tennis courts were placed in a staggered configuration. Grading for the courts was strategically designed to minimize the vertical elements — which also kept project costs to a minimum. By enclosing each court with fencing and windscreens, the players have optimal playability and backdrops.
